Martin Willert - Composer

The break-up and the innovative. The lightening sparkle versus the mass-movement. Where lies the critical transition? Do the questions of the sparkle go beyond our imaginative ability? Perhaps some people's thoughts drifted towards Austria and the extreme-populist's huge success there. An attentive discussion about this power-balance, one charismatic person and many fascinated, exists in the composer Martin Willert's piece Karisma for string orchestra (1998). It is the first work in a series, which deals with these broad questions. The strings of the UmeΠSymphony flourished into airy fragrances and colors, but there were also the icy coldness of the sharp edge. As introduction in the candlelit Backens kyrka this Thursday night, Martin Willert's composition really fitted. It is praiseworthy that the UmeΠSymphony and the chief conductor Roy Goodman takes on our time's new music with such enthusiasm.

The performance felt worked-through and displayed a clear and solid structure, where Willert has chosen to work from a motivic root of a nearly minimalistic type. The logic of the composition was evident and the composer-istic work seemed to be subordinated by the frames of the expression. The hazily suggestive sounds grew into major climaxes in an intense thematic concentration and ebbed out into a gentle mourning expression towards the end - an exciting composition performed in a good way.

Uppbrottet och det nyskapande. Den tändande gnistan respektive massrörelsen. Var ligger den avgörande förflyttningen? Övergår frågorna om gnistan vår föreställningsförmåga? Kanske gick också någras tankar till Österrike och extrempopulismens jordskredsseger där. Ett gripande resonemang om dessa kraftspel, en karismatiker och många hänförda, ligger i tonsättaren Martin Willerts stycke Karisma för stråkorkester (1998). Det ingår som första verk i en serie som lodar dessa vittfamnande frågor. Stråkarbetet hos umesymfonikerna blommade ut i skira dofter och färger, men där fanns också den skarpa eggens iskyla. Som inledning i de levande ljusens sken i Backens kyrka i torsdagskväll föll Martin Willerts komposition verkligen på plats. Det är lovvärt att umesymfonikerna och chefsdirigenten Roy Goodman med sådan entusiasm och arbetsglädje tar sig an vår tids nyskrivna musik.

Framförandet kändes genomarbetat och lade en tydlig och solid struktur i dagen, där Willert valt att arbeta från motivisk grund av närmast minimalistiskt snitt. Kompositionens logik var uppenbar och det kompositoriska arbetet verkade underordnat uttryckets ramar. De diffust suggestiva klangerna växte till kännbara klimax i intensiv tematisk trångföring och planade mot slutet ut i ett ömt klagande uttryck - en spännande komposition framförd på ett gott sätt.
